The Cakewalk

As I approach my 700 km pilgrimage beginning on Aug 29th, I consider my motivations for making this choice. I know I will need my motivations and that they will need to be strong in order to keep me going. What better motivation than cake at the end of the trail! Here is my first effort at making a Santiago cake. It contains ground almonds, sugar, eggs and is flavored with citrus peel and almond extract. It is a pilgrimage tradition to have this nutritious and fortifying treat upon arrival at the great cathedral in Santiago.

It is tasty. Is it worth the walk? I guess I will find out. It suddenly occurred to me that I am going on a cakewalk. If you are inspired to make this cake I can vouch for the recipe on Epicurious. Here are some fun photos of the prep.

Barbara - Ready to go!

Carry On

As I was practicing this morning with my full pack...trying to make friends with my back pack...I started to wonder how women and girls called Carrie might feel about their name. Do they feel burdened or heavy laden? As a person who has recently experienced rapid weight loss, my body antowns mind and especially the soles of my feet react to the weight of the pack.
