Sculptures of Pilgrims at the top of Forgiveness Hill

A grueling climb to this spot...at least for me. At the steepest I would take 25 steps and then stop.

What a reward to see this sculpture and then to have Grace come along to snap the picture.

Later I learned that I had climbed forgiveness hill without knowing it's name. Does that count?

I guess we will see.

Windmills go round and round

I walked for three hours towards these giant windmills expecting them always to be around the next bend in an ever upward path. I am flat lander by experience and it took lots of puffs to get here. It felt like the top of the world. The windmills make a comforting hum like a good alto section of a choir.

Flatlander that I am, I assumed that the descent would be easy. The path down was steep and rocky and just at the moment when my right knee started to twinge slightly, a young man from El Salvador lent me one of his walking poles. He walked with me a while and scurried on ahead assuring me that we would run into each other and I could return his pole then. Sure enough he was cheerfully drinking coffee and airing his feet at the street cafe in the next town.

After only 15 km I am loving this.

Pamplona Arrival

A surprise point of view

I was surprised and delighted by this view of Pamplona from my tiny shower window.

Donkey Hodey

As a kid, I heard a conversation about Don Quixote and misunderstood a great deal of the story. First I assumed it was about a little Spanish donkey called Hodey. I wonder how many other misconceptions and misunderstandings and misinterpretations I lug around? There have been a few pilgrims on the camino accompanied by little donkeys and part of me longs to be one of them.

Tortuga time

I have long believed that it is helpful to .....

Begin with end in mind

Tammy Rempel gave me the gift of this lovely turtle. What a perfect metaphor. I have named her Tortuga?

She points to our destination in Santiago. In reality we are, at the time of writing, at the beginning in Pamplona. Our journey awaits.

I'm off

Thanks for all the good wishes from family and friends. The backpack has been packed and my shoulders taught to accept it willingly. Each item has been carefully selected. From my reading about the camino pilgrimage I have read repeatedly that an early lesson will be the difference between need and want.
